It's not necessarily hard - or expensive - to design publications
with visual impact, according to Scott Baur, EEI's manager of
design services. The key is matching the right level of effort
to the piece, so that no time's wasted in overkill or going down
the wrong path. To start off right, take the time to consider
the following questions:

- What type of piece do you have in mind? Is it intended to be a brochure, a book, a poster?
- What's the goal of the piece? What message should it convey to people?
- What kind of people will see this piece? What is this audience like?
- Are you looking for something simple and basic, or a higher-end, more sophisticated piece?
- At what points would you like to review the work in progress? Many along the way, or just a few?
- Are there "must-dos" or specific graphic standards to meet?
- Who will oversee printing? This decision assigns ultimate responsibility for how good the finished piece looks.
- What's the budget? Can it accommodate any extras that come up as the process advances, or is it fixed?
- When is the deadline? Is that date for printed pieces in hand, files at the printer, an approved concept, or another milestone?
- Can you commit to all of the above in writing?
